ABSTRACT

This paper examines the performance of industries in the trade network in international stock markets during the onset of COVID-19. In general, the value of all industries in G20 countries declines significantly in the pandemic. Stock returns of industries in the central positions of global value chains exhibit remarkable resilience despite the economic hardship caused by COVID-19. This pattern is more pronounced when the disruptions caused by social distancing requirements are considered. We postulate that this is related to the essential services provided by the central industries.

ABSTRACT

In novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), liver injury was found at a high rate, and reports from outside Japan revealed that such injury was related to severity. We examined the characteristics of liver injury in 15 cases of COVID-19. Thirteen of these patients received antiviral therapy, such as favipiravir, remdesivir, and hydroxychloroquine. Liver injury was observed in eight cases at admission for COVID-19. The hepatic CT attenuation values at admission were significantly lower in nine patients who developed liver damage or showed its exacerbation during the treatment than in the remaining patients. Drug-induced liver injury due to antiviral drug was suspected in six cases. Liver injury due to COVID-19 may be related to low hepatic CT attenuation values and be modified by antiviral drugs.Copyright © 2021 The Japan Society of Hepatology.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study analyzes in-depth how knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can achieve higher new product development (NPD) process performance in the epidemic era and examine the internal development mechanism of knowledge-intensive SMEs in the process of continuous digital transformation.Design/methodology/approachThis issue is tested with partial least squares on data collected via a survey conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. The sample comprises 487 knowledge-intensive SMEs operating in China.FindingsThe results indicate that one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, market development strategy (MDS), plays an important role in process performance from an inside-out financial perspective and an outside-in customer perspective. Simultaneously, product innovation efficiency (PIE) mediates the relationship between MDS and the above results. Big data analytics capabilities (BDACs) positively regulate the relationship between MDS and PIE.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors do not consider other contingency factors. Future research should introduce influential factors such as leadership and competitive intensity to further distinguish the effects of MDS on NPD process performance.Practical implicationsThe study findings offer suggestions to help knowledge-intensive SME managers better manage their NPD process by making better use of their limited resources in developing countries such as China.Originality/valueThis study is one of only a few to adopt a process-oriented perspective to specifically examine how one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, MDS, impacts knowledge-intensive SME process performance in the epidemic era. This study also extends the theoretical framework of cross-functional ambidexterity to BDAC research.

ABSTRACT

The goal of this book is to improve the ability of enterprises to implement the green growth model and value chain reconstruction. China's environmental development strategies, such as carbon peak emission and carbon neutrality, have created new challenges and requirements for enterprises to "go green.” In addition, anti-globalization and the complex dynamic uncertainty caused by COVID-19 have changed the operational environment that enterprises face. The application of new technologies, including the new generation of information technologies and the whole process management technology, provides solutions for the implementation of enterprises' green growth model and value chain reconstruction. Based on China's enterprise management cases, this book reveals the connotative features of enterprises' green growth model and their evolutionary regularities, the overall framework and decision optimization of value chain reconstruction under the green growth model, and the approach to implementing the green growth model and value chain reconstruction. The theoretical framework of the green growth model and value chain reconstruction established in this book has enriched and developed the research results in this field. Cases of enterprises implementing the green growth model can provide references for the green transformation of enterprises and help enterprises appreciate the synergy between sustainability and growth. ABSTRACT

PurposeCOVID-19 and its measures such as physical distancing have shifted consumer payment behaviors toward cashless payment. Physical distancing is likely to remain a norm for some time to come and will be relevant in any future pandemics. This study aims to examine the impact of consumers' perceived value of cashless payment on their use intention in the physical distancing context, with the mediating role of psychological safety and the moderating role of trust propensity.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a survey method to obtain data from 690 consumers in an Asian emerging market, i.e. Vietnam. The data were analyzed using different statistical methods, including structural equation modeling.FindingsResults show that perceived value of cashless payment positively affects use intention, and this effect is mediated by psychological safety. Furthermore, trust propensity has a positive moderating effect on the link between perceived value and psychological safety.Practical implicationsThis study's findings provide implications for retailers and other stakeholders in implementing and promoting cashless payment systems, especially in the physical distancing context.Originality/valueThis study is among the first attempt to explain the relationships between consumers' perceptions, feelings of psychological safety and use intention toward cashless payment in the physical distancing context. The study's findings may also be relevant to any future pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Due to the high prevalence of COVID-19 disease and its high mortality rate, it is necessary to identify the symptoms, demographic information and underlying diseases that effectively predict COVID-19 death. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to predict the mortality behavior due to COVID-19 in Khorasan Razavi province. Method(s): This study collected data from 51, 460 patients admitted to the hospitals of Khorasan Razavi province from 25 March 2017 to 12 September 2014. Logistic regression and Neural network methods, including machine learning methods, were used to identify survivors and non-survivors caused by COVID-19. Result(s): Decreased consciousness, cough, PO2 level less than 93%, age, cancer, chronic kidney diseases, fever, headache, smoking status, and chronic blood diseases are the most important predictors of death. The accuracy of the artificial neural network model was 89.90% in the test phase. Also, the sensitivity, specificity and area under the rock curve in this model are equal to 76.14%, 91.99% and 77.65%, respectively. Conclusion(s): Our findings highlight the importance of some demographic information, underlying diseases, and clinical signs in predicting survivors and non-survivors of COVID-19. Also, the neural network model provided high accuracy in prediction. However, medical research in this field will lead to complementary results by using other methods of machine learning and their high power.Copyright © 2022 The Authors.

ABSTRACT

With the advent of healthy visions, two of the trends that have become extremely important in the supply chain in recent decades are corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability, which have affected the activities of buyers and suppliers. The next trend that is emerging is the vision of creating shared value (CSV), which wants to move the supply chain toward solving social problems in a completely strategic way. This research intends to develop a step-by-step framework for evaluating and segmenting suppliers based on CSV criteria in the supply chain. In the first stage, the criteria for creating sustainable shared value (CSSV) are obtained through existing activities in the field of CSR. The obtained criteria are then divided into two categories, strategic and critical, and then the weight of each criterion is obtained using the best–worst method (BWM). In the next step, based on the Kraljic model, the suppliers are divided into four clusters using the preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE) technique. This framework helps the buyer to conclude and select purchasing decisions and relationships with suppliers through the lenses of CSV and sustainability.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore university students' continuous intention toward online learning during COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 120 students enrolled in online learning were surveyed to collect their perception of an extended model by adding task value to the expectation-confirmation model. Structural equation modeling was employed to verify the hypotheses proposed in this study. The results indicated that task value and technology usefulness were significant predictors of students' continuous intention toward online learning. More specifically, technology usefulness had a direct impact on students' continuous intention, while students' perceived task value played an indirect role in the prediction of their continuous intention. However, the impacts of both confirmation and satisfaction were not statistically significant on students' continuous intention. The results suggest that practitioners and researchers should pay special attention to the technological usefulness of online learning environments and task value, especially task value, in order to enhance students' retention of online learning. This study would contribute to implications to better design and implement online learning. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Covid - 19 has affected global value chains (GVCs) and firms' behaviours within GVCs to a large extent. Firms need to find flexible solutions to stabilize production and rethink value chain governance and supplier relationships. Thus, GVCs recover from the initial shock, and the GVCs reconfiguration becomes essential for managers. We reviewed recent literature focusing on the GVCs, the role of governance and Covid - 19 effects on it as well as the regionalization trend. Thus, this study aims to give empirical evidence on the reconfiguration of GVCs, particularly the changes in the structure of suppliers in the global apparel industry, by using the Bloomberg Supply Chain Analysis tool in the period of 2017- 2021. We analysed the structural changes in selected leading apparel multinational companies' GVCs - Industria de Diseno Textil, S.A. (Inditex), Hennes & Mauritz AB (H & M) and adidas AG. The findings provide insights on the current state of the theoretically discussed and widely expected regionalization trend in GVCs. The study concludes that two out of three cases provide evidence indicating an ongoing trend toward GVCs regionalization. The contribution of this study consists of empirical evidence of the changes in GVCs supplier structure in the apparel industry in response to pandemic global business environment. Practical implications and recommendations for businesses and policy makers are related to the revealed theories and testable models by using Bloomberg's Supply Chain Analysis data and linking causes and effects of the GVCs regionalization processes.

ABSTRACT

The respiratory pump that provides pulmonary ventilation includes the respiratory center, peripheral nervous system, chest and respiratory muscles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of the respiratory center and the respiratory muscles strength after COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease 2019). Methods. The observational retrospective cross-sectional study included 74 post-COVID-19 patients (56 (76%) men, median age - 48 years). Spirometry, body plethysmography, measurement of lung diffusing capacity (DLCO), maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP and MEP), and airway occlusion pressure after 0.1 sec (P0.1) were performed. In addition, dyspnea was assessed in 31 patients using the mMRC scale and muscle strength was assessed in 27 of those patients using MRC Weakness scale. Results. The median time from the COVID-19 onset to pulmonary function tests (PFTs) was 120 days. The total sample was divided into 2 subgroups: 1 - P0.1 <= 0.15 kPa (norm), 2 - > 0.15 kPa. The lung volumes, airway resistance, MIP, and MEP were within normal values in most patients, whereas DLCO was reduced in 59% of cases in both the total sample and the subgroups. Mild dyspnea and a slight decrease in muscle strength were also detected. Statistically significant differences between the subgroups were found in the lung volumes (lower) and airway resistance (higher) in subgroup 2. Correlation analysis revealed moderate negative correlations between P0.1 and ventilation parameters. Conclusion. Measurement of P0.1 is a simple and non-invasive method for assessing pulmonary function. In our study, an increase in P0.1 was detected in 45% of post-COVID-19 cases, possibly due to impaired pulmonary mechanics despite the preserved pulmonary ventilation as well as normal MIP and MEP values.Copyright © Savushkina O.I. et al., 2023.

ABSTRACT

We examine the influence of COVID-19 on liquidity of the tourism industry in the UK, Europe and Spain. In the short run, the pandemic causes significant negative stock market reaction in the tourism industry. In the long run, the tourism industry recovers from the fall in returns due to the pandemic. Liquidity significantly decreases due to COVID-19, for the UK, European and Spanish tourism markets, even when we encapsulate the influence of stock prices, trading volume and volatility. Our findings suggest that European equity markets have declined in efficiency due to the pandemic in the tourism industry. Our empirical analysis has important implications for policy makers. Tourism recovery strategies from the pandemic are required with immediate effect in order to restore the valuation of the tourism companies, given that the negative stock price reaction and lack of liquidity significantly reduces market value of the tourism firms across Europe. In order for the tourism industry to fully recover from COVID-19, investors need to have the confidence to buy large volumes of tourism company stocks, which will increase the price and liquidity, leading to a substantial increase in market capitalization.

The objective of the research was to propose a conceptual model with the integration of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Dynamic Capabilities Theory, and the Contingency Theory, and with the review and analysis of the topics e-Service Quality (e-SQ), e-Relationship Quality, e-Trust, e-Satisfaction, Disruptive Factors, Technology Platform, Customer Involvement and Interaction, Value Co-Creation and Continuous e-Loyalty. E-service is strategically used to create brand value. E-commerce will strongly depend on trust. Therefore, online companies must make and maintain a loyal customer base. The face-to-face pre-purchase research, post-purchase feedback, website, and social media technologies have changed e-commerce into more social commerce. The imposition of accelerated technology, consumer interaction, and the fierce COVID-19 pandemic are the factors that most influence value co-creation. ABSTRACT

Knowledge payment is a new method of electronic learning that has developed in the era of social media. With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the market for knowledge payment is rapidly expanding. Exploring the factors that influence users' sustained willingness is beneficial for better communication between knowledge payment platforms and users, and for achieving a healthier and more sustainable development of the knowledge payment industry. The model of unsustainable usage behavior of knowledge payment users was constructed on the basis of expectation inconsistency theory, price equilibrium theory, and perceived value theory, using the 'cognitive-emotional-behavioral' model framework of cognitive emotion theory. The data were collected from 348 users through a web-based questionnaire and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings show that expectation inconsistency, price equilibrium, and quality value, emotional value, and social value have significant effects on discontinuous use intentions. Discontinuous use intentions also significantly affect discontinuous use behavior. © 2013 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

In the post-covid world, governments explore options to enhance their policies so that corporations can act as successful motors of recovery and sustainable growth. Countries select various objectives related to global value chains (GVC), such as participation, value capture, inclusiveness and resilience, yet might be unaware of the position of corporations they are supposed to motivate. In this paper, we aim to (re-)investigate the position of Visegrad Four (V4) suppliers within the regional automotive value chains and to compare results with suppliers in other EU member states using the trade in value added (TiVA) statistics. We set two research questions: How does the position of V4 in automotive GVCs differ from the positions of other EU member states and significant other automotive-producing countries? What is the link between the domestic value added in gross exports of final automotive products and the selected policy variables? A multiple linear regression model is run with TiVA in the automotive industry as the dependent variable and independent variables embodying proxies of GVC-oriented policy consequences. The analysis identifies significant differences in value-added levels between V4 countries and other EU countries, and other large automotive-producing economies. Labour costs, productivity, investment in R&D and innovation support are among the factors where V4 countries fall behind. Implications for Central European audience: The results of our research might be helpful for respective authorities and governments in V4 and other Central and Eastern European countries. They can be of use when setting goals and implementing policies targeted at promoting innovation, upgrading within existing GVCs and in cooperation between universities and research centres on the one hand and the automotive industry on the other. © 2023, Central European Business Review. ABSTRACT

This article shows that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed informal institutional voids that exist for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) business owners in the United Kingdom. Based on a primary database of surveys and semi-structured interviews, the results show that many BAME small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners encountered informal institutional voids that White SME owners did not face during the pandemic. The article also shows how these BAME SME owners created value amid these institutional voids and how they can continue to do so. The article concludes by suggesting that bridging these voids is crucial for promoting a more inclusive environment where ethnic and non-ethnic entrepreneurs can succeed. It also presents policy implications and offers directions for future research.

ABSTRACT

PurposeDigital transformation in supply chains (SCs) has emerged as one of the most effective ways to minimize SC disruption risks. Given the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global SCs, this study aims to identify and provide empirical evidence about the drivers of digital SC transformation, considering the interactivity between environmental dynamism, technology, and organizational capabilities during the pandemic era.Design/methodology/approachUsing partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), this study examines 923 firms in Vietnam to ascertain the drivers of digital SC transformation between small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises, based on the technology–organization–environment (TOE) as an overarching framework.FindingsThis study finds that greater digital SC transformation adoption could be achieved under the interactivity between the TOE components of firms' technological competencies, learning capabilities, and disruptions in socioeconomic environments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, a multigroup analysis shows that the drivers of digital SC transformation differ between SMEs and large enterprises. SMEs were found to be more motivated by the COVID-19 disruption risk when adopting digital SC models.Originality/valueThis study represents an original and novel contribution from Vietnam as an emerging market to the literature on the impact of COVID-19 on the global value chain. Apart from the unique dataset at the firm level, the analysis of interactions between external and internal drivers of digital SC transformation could provide crucial managerial implications for SMEs to survive major disruptions, such as those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

In developing countries like Pakistan, mostly the public sector departments give not as much of focus on the performance / capacity building as well as the satisfaction of the employees, the research was conducted to know the influence of the factors perceived on the performance of public sector employees by increasing satisfaction and for this purpose the Civil Defence Department was selected. The study was conducted on the mixed method approach in which both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were adopted to know the responses of the employees of the Civil Defence Department regarding research objectives. Questionnaires, both in open ended and close ended format were distributed among 100 employees of the Civil Defence Department as per the availability of the skeleton staff during COVID-19. The hypotheses were equipped to recognize the significance relationship of variables as well as statistical analysis was applied through SPSS to examine the acceptance or rejection of the hypothesis. Hence, the result instigated that factors perceived in this study have significance influenced on the performance and satisfaction of the public sector employees.

ABSTRACT

Reaching a proper diagnosis for critically ill patients is like collecting pieces of puzzle and bed side lung ultrasound (LUS) becomes a crucial piece complementary to clinical and laboratory pieces. It is a bed side, real time tool for diagnosis of patients in ICU who are critical to be transferred to radiology unit especially in Covid-19 pandemic with risk of infection transmission. The aim was to evaluate the accuracy of lung ultrasound in assessment of critically ill patients admitted to Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), moreover to assess its diagnostic performance in different pulmonary diseases as compared to the gold standard approach accordingly. This observational prospective (cross sectional) study with a total 183 patients who met the inclusion criteria,were selected from patients admitted at the RICU;Chest Department, Zagazig University Hospitals, during the period from September 2019 to September 2021. LUS examination was performed to diagnose the different pulmonary diseases causing RF. All cases were examined by LUS on admission. From a total 183 patients, 111 patients 60.7% were males and 72 patients 39.3% were females, with a mean age of 56+/-12.77 years, 130 patients were breathing spontaneously received conservative management with O2 therapy, 32 patients needed NIV while 21 patients needed IMV with ETT. Exacerbated COPD was the most common disease finally diagnosed followed by bacterial pneumonia, exacerbated ILD, post Covid-19 fibrosis and pulmonary embolism in32, 29,27, 19 and 11 patients respectively with corresponding diagnostic accuracy of LUS 97.3%, AUC=0.943, 93.9% (AUC=0.922), 96.7%(AUC=0.920), 97.8%, AUC=0.895, and 97.8% respectively, while Covid-19 pneumonia was the final diagnosis in 8 patients with LUS diagnostic accuracy of 97.8% (AUC=0.869) with no statistical significant difference p-value=0.818 with bacterial pneumonia in distribution of US profiles. A profile was the commonest detected US profile among the studied patients followed by B profile, C profile, A/B profile and A' profile in 37.2%, 24.6%, 15.8% 4.9%, and 3.8% of cases respectively. Bed side LUS has a reliable, valuable diagnostic performance when integrated with clinical and laboratory data for the diagnosis of most pulmonary diseases in RICU.Copyright © 2023, Colegio de Farmaceuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in contact universities entering the distance learning market, creating new competition for Open Distance Electronic Learning (ODeL) institutions. To achieve sustainable competitive advantage, these institutions need to formulate sound strategies to attract and retain students. This study investigated the precursors and outcomes of perceived value in achieving student loyalty in ODeL institutions. A quantitative approach was employed to gather data using self-administered online questionnaires, with 1 430 responses. The partial least squares structural equation modeling technique was used to test the proposed model. The results indicate that an ODeL institution's reputation and service quality positively influence student value, while the outcomes are trust, commitment, and student loyalty. However, institutional reputation was found to have more influence on student value than service quality, and commitment had more influence on loyalty than trust. While a number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between the variables/constructs, service quality and reputation as determinants of customer value and trust and commitment's influence on loyalty, they do not show the differences in the magnitude of each variable. This study showed that although all these factors correlate and positively influence one another, there are major differences in the magnitude of influence. It is thus recommended that ODeL institutions should formulate strategies aimed at enhancing institutional reputation, value, and student commitment in order to retain student loyalty. © International Network for Higher Education in Africa, University of Kwazulu-Natal. ABSTRACT

Objective. To evaluate a potential of cystatin C blood concentration to predict acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with a COVID-19. Materials and methods. An observational prospective study of 117 patients with severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with a COVID-19 in an ICU setting was conducted in 2020-2022 (site: multifunctional Medical Center, 1586 Military Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, Moscow Region, Russia). Routine laboratory tests and instrumental examinations were performed according to generally accepted protocols. Cystatin C concentrations in blood (s-CysC) and urine (u-CysC) were measured by immunoturbidimetric method. Results. AKI was diagnosed in 21 (17.9%) patients, kidney dysfunction without AKI was found in 22 (18.8%) patients with severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with COVID-19. s-CysC and u-CysC levels in the group of patients with AKI were statistically significantly higher compared to the levels in the group of patients without AKI. The levels of s-CysC obtained within Day 1 - T (-1), and Day 2 - T (-2) prior to AKI onset turned out to be the independent factors for AKI development in patients with severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with COVID-19: OR 5.37, Wald chi-square 5.534 (CI: 1.324;21.788);P=0.019 and OR 3.225, Wald chi-square 4.121 (CI: 1.041;9.989);P=0.042, respectively. s-CysC T (-2) value is informative, and s- CysC T (-1) is a highly informative predictor of AKI development in severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with COVID-19: ROC AUC 0.853 (95% CI, 0.74-0.966), P_0.001) with 90% sensitivity and 73% specificity at a cut-off of 1.67 mg/L, and ROC AUC 0.905 (95% CI, 0.837-0.973), P_0.001) with 90% sensitivity and 73% specificity at a cut-off of 1.69 mg/l, respectively. Serum CysC levels started increasing 3 days prior to AKI onset, outpacing the increase of SCr levels. The u-CysC levels were not predictive of AKI development. Impaired renal function probability was increasing with patients' age (P_0.0001). Conclusions. Serum CysC seems to be a statistically significant predictor of AKI. s-CysC levels started increasing 3 days prior to AKI onset, surpassing the increase of SCr levels in patients with severe and extremely severe pneumonia associated with COVID-19. Urine CysC did not achieve statistical significance as a predictor for AKI, although u-CysC concentrations were significantly higher on days 3, 2, 1 prior to AKI onset and on the day of AKI onset in the group of patients with AKI.Copyright © 2023, V.A.
